Joss Stone's Colour Me Free

♣♣♣ ♣
“Aw yeah, I gotta get my hands on that. That’s going to be awesome”.
These are the words that I remember saying to myself when I heard that there was a new Joss Stone album that was due to come out.
I remember vigorously perusing through all of the information I could acquire about its impending release and I remember getting really excited about it, especially after I read about her collaborations with the likes of Raphael Saadiq, Nas, and Sheila E.
I remember the day that I saw the album available on Itunes. I immediately purchased it and, as it downloaded to my computer, I remember the eager moments waiting for the undoubtedly groovy sonic experience that was about to take over.
I remember isolating the album on my Itunes library, pressing play, and listening to the album from start to finish
And after 52.4 minutes of Joss Stone, my genuine opinion is this:
It was…okay.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Joss Stone, as a singer, is a phenomenal talent. Her voice is nothing short of amazing, she’s got soulful delivery, and there isn’t anything technically wrong with any of her arrangements on this or any other albums that she has produced. These are the factors that keep me coming back and get me excited for new Joss Stone albums when they are to be released

The problem, however, is that Joss Stone continuously fails to incorporate something that really is beyond music. Her music quite simply just has no personality.
Now on this particular album there are a few positive outliers in “Governmentalist” and “Incredible”. But, the rest of the album comes off as Joss Stone just going through the motions. The songs are cold, forgettable, and at times, down-right boring.
Governmentalist
Incredible
But to be honest, Joss Stone could probably just keep riding her fabulous voice and keep delivering uninspiring heaps of music for the rest of her life. I’m sure that people (myself included) would keep supporting her just based on the fact that she has such great vocal ability. But, if she ever wants to rise up over U.K. contemporaries like Duffy and Amy Winehouse, she really has got claim something that is uniquely hers. She has got to grab hold of that “it” factor and come out with a magnum opus. To put it bluntly: She just has to give us something better than this.
I know that the Joss Stone that I’m dreaming of is coming. But as of right now, I’m still waiting.
